History of the Cottage and Railway Line

In 1845, the Edinburgh & Northern railway company was formed to build a line across Fife, linking Edinburgh with Dundee, St Andrews and the north. In 1882, contracts were awarded for Anstruther station and the two keeper's cottages at Thirdpart Railway Crossing and Kirkmay.

The line from Anstruther to Boarhills opened in 1883, with the final section to St Andrews opening in 1887. Services were restricted during the First World War, the four stations north of Crail closed in 1930, and the railway finally closed in 1965.

Level crossings were originally attended by a company 'policeman', with the electric telegraph later enabling gate keepers to be warned of an approaching train - Thirdpart crossing communicated with Crail and Anstruther by a set number of telephone rings.
